We enrolled our daughter Kelsey in the Dexter Karate Academy one year ago. We were hoping to find an activity that kept her interest and gave her some fundamentals for self defense. What she got was so much more, she has become more self-confident in her daily life, has gained tremendous leadership skills and has become much more outgoing and self-assured, along with a myriad of many other positive reinforcements that she will carry with her for a lifetime.

We recently had the pleasure of having Sensei Gerber of Dexter Karate Academy visit our preschool and five a demonstration. Sensei showed both the children and the adults how karate is so much more than punches or kicks. Sensei taught about respect, self-discipline, focus, and “stranger danger”. Using a combination of direct instruction games, demonstrations, and humor, Sensei was able to engage the children in a fun and meaningful lesson. Thank you Sensei Gerber!

As a parent, my husband and I are trying to provide our daughter, Sarah with the right tools to succeed. We enrolled Sarah when she was just 6 years old, since she started taking classes two nights a week she has developed 8 essential life skills: Focus,Teamwork,Control,Balance,Memory,Discipline, Coordination and Fitness. They teach so many valuable lessons and have lots of fun doing it. Sarah has celebrated her birthday twice at the dojo. Her friends really enjoyed learning self defense techniques and playing games. We also like the way Dexter Karate Academy participates with Martial Arts for St Jude Childeren's Reasearch Hospital. The kids enjoy collecting pledges for the kick a thon. Sarah is 10 years old now and we are very pleased with her academic performance, which in part is due to the skills she has learned at the dojo.

Our Journey with karate started 2 1/2 years ago when Ryahn came home from kindergarten talking about Sensei Gerber and how much fun karate was. Thinking it was just the thing of the day, we really didn't see much into it. Two months later Ryan was still talking about how much he wanted to do karate so we decided it was time to let him try. Ryan Started out in the Tiny Tiger program, went through the little dragon program and is now in the juniors program. He has worked his way up and through each program to get to where he is now.
Along the way he has learned valuable skills to help him through karate itself, but more importantly through life. The most important skills he has learned and continues to work on is his self-control and self- discipline. This has helped him at home, but especially in school. In school Ryan had a hard time sitting still and concentrating, but when he remembers to use his self- control and self-discipline it helps him to work. This has also been a tool we use as parents since all we have to do is say to him is to remember his self-control. Karate also gives Ryan a sense of accomplishment and goals to strive for when he is working towards his next belt color.
Not only has karate helped Ryan with his mental aspect of using his mind, karate has helped Ryan physically. When Ryan first started karate he had absolutely no sense of balance. Now, he is much better at balancing and continues to work on it. Ryan has also become much stonger and runs faster since starting karate; this helps out when it comes to the other sports he participates in.
Another important benefit of Tyan is the sense of community. Ryan has made new friends who all have something in common and karate is something they can have fun doing together. Also, as parents we have made new friends in the karate community. He has had opportunities he may have never had at his age; such as participation in the national tournamnet for 2 years and traveling to those different places.
The community of karate stresses a sense of being. Meaning- a balance of karate, community, school, relationships, safety, family, self-discipline, and especially fun.
